Saturday, September 6th, West Broadway came alive—even with the rain coming down. The weather tried, but it couldn’t wash away the energy, culture, and love Black folks brought to Open Streets West Broadway.
Booths lined the block with food sizzling, t-shirts laid out fresh, baked goods tempting everybody walking by, and resources ready for anyone who needed them. People showed up to support—umbrellas in hand, smiles on faces, and kids turning the wet pavement into their own dance floor. Walter Q-Bear Banks kept one end of Broadway moving with his sound, while another DJ kept the opposite side jumping. And in the middle, the YMCA stage gave us pure culture with talent that reminded everybody why music is at the core of who we are.
Men In Black De-escalation was proud to be present—not just keeping things safe but also engaging with the people. We handed out stickers to the youth, took photos with families, and stood as that steady presence our community knows they can trust. The real message was clear: when our people and our businesses feel safe, we can grow, thrive, and shine—together.

Events like Open Streets aren’t just about food, fun, and music. They’re proof that, rain or shine, Black culture and Black resilience never fold. And when safety is rooted in love and respect, the community can dance freely, eat fully, and celebrate boldly.
My mother who passed away from COVID, was such a fan of rainbows! The funny thing is that after the rain subsided and the sun decided to shine, a huge beautiful rainbow came out at the ending of the event, and I’d like to say it was a kiss to myself and MIB saying “Good Job y’all. ”

MIB is honored to walk with the people, to protect these moments, and to remind everyone: safe spaces are thriving spaces.
